Instructions
Make the Oatmeal
Pour the milk into a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the rolled oats and stir to combine.
Stir in the applesauce, cinnamon, and salt (if using).
Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low. Simmer for 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the oats are tender and the mixture has thickened.
Pour into a bowl and add your favorite toppings. Serve immediately.
Notes
Microwave method: Combine all ingredients in a large microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 2 minutes, stir, then microwave 1 more minute. Let sit 30 seconds before eating.
Sweetened applesauce: If using sweetened applesauce, start with ¼ cup and add more to taste. You likely won't need any additional sweetener.
Rolled oats only: Quick oats will turn mushy. Steel-cut oats take much longer. Old-fashioned rolled oats give the best texture in this time frame.
For babies: Skip honey for babies under 1 year. Use water instead of milk for the youngest babies and blend to a smooth consistency.
