Homemade Applesauce BBQ Sauce

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Most BBQ sauce recipes call for a full cup of brown sugar.

I always thought that was the only way to get that thick, sweet, sticky coating you want on ribs and chicken.

Then I ran out of brown sugar one Saturday afternoon and grabbed a jar of applesauce off the shelf instead.

That batch of applesauce BBQ sauce was better than anything I'd made before.

The fruit gives it natural sweetness without all that refined sugar, and the pectin in the applesauce makes it cling to meat in a way that regular sauce just can't.

I've been making it this way ever since.

My family doesn't even know the difference. They just know it tastes better.

What I love about this recipe is how fast it comes together. One saucepan, 30 minutes, and you've got about 2 cups of sauce that works on ribs, pulled pork, chicken, burgers, or anything else you can throw on a grill.

Most "apple BBQ sauce" recipes online don't even use applesauce. They use apple juice or apple cider or apple butter. This one actually delivers on the name.

Give it a try. You won't go back to store-bought.

Why Applesauce Makes Better BBQ Sauce

Applesauce does three things that regular sweeteners can't.

First, it adds natural sweetness so you need way less brown sugar. We're talking 3 tablespoons instead of half a cup.

Second, the pectin in applesauce gives the sauce real body. It coats meat and stays put instead of sliding right off.

Third, the natural acidity from the apples provides tang without dumping in a ton of vinegar.

The subtle fruit flavor underneath is what makes it special. It complements pork and chicken in a way that pure sugar never could.

Worth the swap? Every time.

Ingredients

You probably have most of these in your pantry right now.

  • Unsweetened applesauce (1 cup). This is the base. Use unsweetened so you control exactly how sweet the sauce gets. Store-bought is perfect here.
  • Ketchup (1 cup). The tomato backbone. Any brand works, but I like the flavor of Heinz.
  • Apple cider vinegar (¼ cup). Adds tang and brightness. Don't substitute white vinegar, the apple flavor matters.
  • Brown sugar (3 tablespoons). Just enough to deepen the molasses notes. You'll notice this is much less than most BBQ sauce recipes call for.
  • Worcestershire sauce (2 tablespoons). Umami depth that makes everything taste meatier.
  • Dijon mustard (1 tablespoon). Subtle heat and helps emulsify the sauce so it stays smooth.
  • Smoked paprika (1 teaspoon). This is where the smokiness comes from. No grill needed.
  • Garlic powder (1 teaspoon). Savory backbone.
  • Onion powder (½ teaspoon). Rounds out the garlic.
  • Kosher salt (½ teaspoon). Brings all the flavors together.
  • Black pepper (¼ teaspoon). Just a touch.
  • Cayenne pepper (¼ teaspoon, optional). If you like a little kick. Skip it for a family-friendly version.

How to Make Applesauce BBQ Sauce

Step 1: Combine Everything

Add all ingredients to a medium saucepan.

Whisk until everything is smooth and well combined.

This takes about 1 minute.

Step 2: Bring to a Simmer

Set the pan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.

You'll see small bubbles start to form around the edges.

Step 3: Low and Slow

Reduce heat to low and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

The sauce will thicken as the liquid reduces.

Fair warning: Stir it every few minutes or it will stick to the bottom of the pan.

Step 4: Taste and Adjust

This is your sauce, so make it yours.

Want more tang? Add another splash of vinegar.

Need more sweetness? Another tablespoon of brown sugar.

More smoke? Double the smoked paprika.

Step 5: Cool Completely

Remove from heat and let it cool to room temperature.

The sauce will thicken even more as it cools, so don't worry if it seems a little thin while hot.

Want it super smooth? Hit it with an immersion blender. I like mine with a little texture, but that's a personal call.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Smoky apple BBQ sauce. Add 1 teaspoon liquid smoke or double the smoked paprika for a deep, campfire-like flavor.
  • Spicy chipotle version. Stir in 1-2 teaspoons chipotle chili powder or a spoonful of adobo sauce from a can of chipotles. Fantastic on pulled pork.
  • For ribs. Simmer an extra 5-10 minutes to thicken it up. Add 1 tablespoon molasses for deeper caramelization.
  • For pulled pork. Thin it slightly with a splash of apple cider for a saucier consistency that coats shredded meat evenly.
  • No-ketchup version. Replace the ketchup with 2 tablespoons tomato paste plus an extra ½ cup applesauce. It'll be fruitier and less processed.
  • Bourbon apple BBQ sauce. Add 2 tablespoons bourbon in the last 5 minutes of cooking. The alcohol cooks off, leaving a rich, warming depth.

Best Ways to Use Applesauce BBQ Sauce

This sauce is incredibly versatile.

Brush it on ribs during the last 30 minutes of smoking or baking.

Toss it with shredded pulled pork for sandwiches.

Glaze grilled or baked chicken thighs in the last few minutes of cooking.

Slather it on burgers instead of regular ketchup.

Use it as a dipping sauce for chicken tenders or fries.

Mix it into your meatball or meatloaf glaze for a sweet, smoky twist.

Whether you're grilling, baking, or slow cooking, this sauce hits the spot.

How to Store Applesauce BBQ Sauce

  • Refrigerator. Transfer to an airtight jar or container. Keeps for up to 2 weeks.
  • Freezer. Pour into freezer-safe containers, leaving a little room for expansion. Good for up to 3 months.
  • Canning. This sauce is acidic enough for water-bath canning. Process in half-pint jars for 15 minutes if you want shelf-stable gifts or long-term storage.
  • Before using. Give it a good stir or shake. It may separate slightly during storage, which is totally normal.

I like to make a double batch and jar some for gifts. People always ask for the recipe.
