Creamy Greek Tzatziki Chicken Salad

Deli chicken salad and I broke up years ago.

It was the mayo, honestly.

That heavy, gloppy coating that sits on your tongue and makes a sandwich feel like a nap waiting to happen.

Then I started spooning tzatziki onto everything in my kitchen, and one afternoon it clicked: why not make the whole thing tzatziki?

So I did.

I swapped the mayo for cool, tangy Greek yogurt loaded with grated cucumber, fresh dill, lemon, and garlic, then folded in briny kalamata olives and salty feta.

The first bowl disappeared before I even got it onto pita.

I make a batch almost every Sunday now, and it carries me through a week of lunches.

My wife, who once defended her Wawa hoagie like it was family, asks for this one by name.

What I love most is how scoopable it is. Creamy without being claggy, bright instead of rich.

It comes together in about 15 minutes with rotisserie chicken, no stove required.

Pile it into lettuce cups, stuff it in warm pita, or scoop it onto crackers. I promise it beats anything sweating behind the deli glass.

Why You'll Love This Tzatziki Chicken Salad

This is the chicken salad for people who don't love chicken salad. The tzatziki base changes everything about the texture and the flavor.

  • Completely mayo-free. The creaminess comes from Greek yogurt, so it tastes light and tangy instead of heavy.
  • Packed with protein. Between the chicken and the yogurt, one scoop actually keeps you full until dinner.
  • Ready in 15 minutes. Grab rotisserie chicken and there's nothing to cook.
  • It gets better overnight. The dill and garlic soak into every bite, so leftovers are the best part.
  • Endlessly serveable. Lettuce cups, pita, crackers, or straight off the spoon at midnight. No judgment here.

Ingredients You'll Need

Everything here is easy to find and most of it is no-cook. A rotisserie chicken does the heavy work for you.

  • Shredded cooked chicken (3 cups). Rotisserie is my go-to for speed, but leftover roasted or poached chicken breast works just as well.
  • Full-fat plain Greek yogurt (¾ cup). This is the mayo replacement, so don't skimp. Full-fat stays thick and creamy and won't turn watery.
  • English cucumber (½, grated and squeezed dry). This goes into the dressing. Squeezing out the water is the step that keeps everything scoopable.
  • Cucumber (½ cup, finely diced). A little extra for crunch and that fresh, cool bite in every forkful.
  • Fresh dill (2 tablespoons, chopped). The signature tzatziki herb. Fresh is non-negotiable here, dried just won't sing.
  • Garlic (2 cloves, minced). Raw and punchy, exactly like real tzatziki.
  • Fresh lemon juice (2 tablespoons). Brightness that wakes the whole bowl up.
  • Red wine vinegar (1 teaspoon). A small splash of tang that makes it taste authentically Greek.
  • Cherry tomatoes (½ cup, quartered). Little pops of sweetness against the tangy dressing.
  • Kalamata olives (⅓ cup, pitted and chopped). Briny, meaty, and so good with the feta.
  • Crumbled feta (½ cup). Buy a block and crumble it yourself for the creamiest texture.
  • Red onion (¼ cup, finely diced). Sharp and crisp. Soak it in cold water for a few minutes if you want it milder.
  • Kosher salt and black pepper. Season in layers and taste as you go.

Want to bulk it up? Toss in ½ cup chickpeas for extra fiber or ¼ cup chopped almonds for crunch. Both are optional and both are great.

How to Make Greek Tzatziki Chicken Salad

The secret is treating the dressing like real tzatziki, not just plain yogurt. Build it first, then fold everything else in.

Step 1: Build the Tzatziki Dressing

Grate half an English cucumber on the large holes of a box grater.

Now squeeze it. Really squeeze it, in a clean towel or your hands, until the water runs out.

This is the step everyone skips, and it's why their salad turns into soup.

In a large bowl, stir the squeezed cucumber together with the Greek yogurt, dill, garlic, lemon juice, red wine vinegar, salt, and pepper.

Taste it. It should taste like tzatziki you'd happily eat with a spoon.

Step 2: Shred the Chicken

Pull your cooked chicken into bite-sized shreds with two forks or your fingers.

I like a mix of bigger pieces and small ones so every scoop has something to chew.

Step 3: Fold and Chill

Add the chicken, diced cucumber, tomatoes, olives, red onion, and feta to the bowl.

Fold gently until everything is coated, but stop before the feta breaks down completely. You want those creamy little crumbles to stay intact.

Cover and chill for 20 to 30 minutes if you can wait.

Worth the extra step? Every time. The flavors marry and it tastes twice as good.

Tips for the Best Chicken Salad

A few small moves make a big difference here. None of them are hard.

  • SQUEEZE the cucumber. I can't say it enough. Dry cucumber keeps the salad thick and scoopable instead of runny.
  • Season in layers. Salt the dressing, then taste again after folding in the salty feta and olives. You may need less than you think.
  • Taste after chilling. Cold dulls flavor, so a rested salad sometimes wants another squeeze of lemon right before serving.
  • Go easy on the feta. Fold it in last and gently, so it stays in creamy crumbles rather than smearing into the dressing.
  • Use a block of feta. Pre-crumbled feta is coated in anti-caking starch and never tastes as good.

Ways to Serve It

This is where the salad really earns its keep. One bowl, so many lunches.

  • In lettuce cups. Spoon it into crisp butter lettuce leaves for a light, low-carb plate.
  • Stuffed in pita. Warm a pita, open the pocket, and pile it in. My favorite way, hands down.
  • On crackers. Sturdy seeded crackers turn it into the easiest snack-y lunch.
  • Over greens. Scoop it onto a bed of arugula or romaine if you want something more dinner-sized.
  • As a wrap. Roll it into a soft flatbread with a few extra cucumber slices.

Make-Ahead and Storage

This salad was basically built for meal prep. It actually improves with a night in the fridge.

  • The fridge. Store it in an airtight container for 3 to 4 days. Give it a quick stir before each serving.
  • Make-ahead. Mix the whole thing up to a day in advance. The dill and garlic only get better.
  • The freezer. Skip it. Yogurt splits when it thaws and the texture turns grainy.

Variations

The base is forgiving, so play around. Here's how I switch it up.

  • Add chickpeas. A drained ½ cup adds fiber and makes it even more filling.
  • Add crunch. Stir in ¼ cup chopped almonds just before serving so they stay crisp.
  • Make it dairy-free. Use a thick coconut or almond-based yogurt and skip the feta. Still creamy, still tangy.
  • Give it heat. A pinch of Aleppo pepper or red pepper flakes adds a gentle warmth that plays nicely with the dill.
  • More herbs. A little chopped mint or parsley alongside the dill leans extra fresh and Mediterranean.
